Artist Statement
Dance is an experimental playground, a place for the investigation and exploration of how the mind, body, and spirit connect. Through movement, I uncover and study this interconnectivity as I delve into who we are as people and artists. Dance is honesty in its purest form. It provides clarity when words cannot. Dance is my truth at a given moment.
My work integrates physicality and athleticism within collaborative, somatic-based, improvisational, jazz, modern, and contemporary techniques. Driven by my explorations and experiences, I work to extend the expressive possibilities of live performance through form and formlessness, interactions with another person or object, and experiments in staging and technology. I expect authenticity in movement and investigate achieving embodiment by providing opportunities for the dancers to physically experience the intention of a piece and deepen their understanding of a work. These experiences assist in yielding total commitment and honesty in performance.
At the time of performance I strive to reach a broader audience and bring dance to the public through the integration of technology and the use of unconventional spaces. I aspire to involve the audience in an open and honest way, engaging with them and inviting them to viscerally connect with the dancers. I want the honesty of the movement to not only connect with the audience, but also encourage the observers and dancers to engage with one another and blur the roles of the traditional triadic perspective.
